If I had to make a top-5 list of client requests for 2013 (so far), near the top would be- SHOW ME THE BEST GRAY PAINT COLORS YOU’VE GOT! Oh, I could have only dreamed 5 years ago, when you all told me it was too sad…
That’s okay, we’re making up for lost time. And it’s beautiful!
As a colorist, I will tell you, gray is tricky. It’s all about lighting and what flows with your wood tone(s). If you have experimented, you may have found that gray shades tend to go cooler on the walls (this has been my experience). I usually choose colors with a little more warmth (leaning brown) then I actually want to see, unless we’re going for a blue/gray. There are other complications too, like green, blue, and violet undertones.
Lately, I have been loving the options by Sherwin Williams. Don’t get me wrong, Benjamin Moore, Behr, & Martha have tried and true winners, but they are a little sporadic. I like the fact that Sherwin’s grays, my favorites ranging from 7014-7055, are quite true in gradation from light to dark. So if you are 1 of the happily obsessed, you can choose your favorite shade and play with value from room to room, wall to ceiling, etc.
In addition to Sherwin’s original fan deck, they have a magic little mini deck called “Concepts in Color”- a designer favorite (myself included). All of the versatile hues flow well together. There are a lot of great grays hiding in this deck too.
So test, test away… With all of these great options, the right shade awaits. If you just can’t seem to find it? You know where I am! No stranger to gray paint. :)
