They are retro, they are Instagram, they are calming, they are a vast departure from jarring neons, they are…
Pastel shades have been on the trend radar for the past several years, but just in the last several months have I really felt their impact across all creative avenues.
It’s interesting… took me a while to even realize I was seeing “pastel”. We’ve become so used to viewing images through various trendy photo filters that create this dreamlike state.
One philosophy behind the trend, is pastel colors create a peaceful escape from the chaotic demands of everyday life. At least this is what I’ve read, reiterated through various sources.
I certainly noticed this color state of mind in paging through the December JCrew catalog. Interesting and artful, offbeat color combinations, soft and ethereal, actually very beautiful!
Also to note, Benjamin Moore recently named “breath of fresh air” the 2014 Color of the Year. It’s a pale pastel blue that inspired an entire paint color palette, check it out.
In attending a recent Benjamin Moore color event, introducing the Williamsburg collection and also discussing “Color Stories” (which by the way, is full of insanely beautiful hues), the speaker asked the audience if anyone had noticed the upsurge in pastels (to which 1/3 of the audience gasped, lol).
It’s not for everyone… But we will keep our eyes on these gentle pinks, yellows, tans, and blue/greens to see where they take us…
Cheers readers :)
