This post comes to you as a friendly encore to the reader favorite, Modernize Honey Oak, Yes We Can :)
“What should I do with my trim?” The question I hear most frequently! It usually leads into this conversation… “My home is very traditional, and I love contemporary, but I feel like I can’t mix styles.”
To which I respond, yes you can! Don’t let the wood hold you back.
What to do– Keep all wood natural, paint some portions white, or paint all trim white. There are no rules, I’ve seen all options work beautifully. The key is consistency- develop a pattern and keep it uniform throughout.
If you keep wood trim natural– Give your paint colors extra consideration. Complex, muddy tones and shades of white complement wood best (in my opinion). The photo above is a great example, check out this entire post from Design Sponge.
Then to create the contemporary twist you love, here are my favorite tricks…
1. Clean Lines. If you notice in the photo examples, all decor is kept very minimal. Wood trim does add the busy factor, so balance with open space and large accents.
2. Light to Balance Dark. If your wood is medium to dark, keep 1/3 of the room light. This could be your walls, or if your walls are darker, your rug and furniture.
3. Modern Art. Even in an ultra traditional room, one piece of oversize, modern art can shift the entire mood. Don’t be afraid to make a statement. Etsy & minted.com are a few of my favorite spots for art prints.
4. Simple Window Treatments. Not a swag to be found! Keep things feeling contemporary/clean/modern with simple shades and a curtain panel or two.
