Recently, we stumbled across my kindergarten assessment and the handwritten note from teacher read “creative child with an outstanding design sense”. The funny thing about these words which repeated through childhood is, I had no real interest in hearing them! I would think to myself, who cares, I wish I was good in sports. Isn’t that how life goes :)
This attitude continued into college until the day a professor asked if I would consider changing my major to art. I don’t know why this short question was such a pivotal moment in my life, but it really was… It made me think about years spent drawing, color-mixing and creating in a different way. So- I changed my major to art. And it felt so good! To this day, the smell of oil paint and charcoal pencils brings back a flood of excitement.
I went on to complete a B.A. in Art/Graphic Design from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and work in advertising and merchandising as a graphic designer and art director for a decade. I learned so much about business and enjoyed the work but struggled to sit at a computer for long hours which caused an arm issue that ultimately forced me to reinvent my path.
For a moment, I believed my work life was over but little did I know it was just beginning*
I launched Color Zen in 2009 with intentions to only offer paint color consulting but luck has sprinkled this path in many ways. Clients asked for more and I wanted more! So at this time we offer a full range of color and interior design services.
The passion I have for this business is hard to put into words. It feels natural, rewarding, challenging, inspiring, and a little larger than life. When you walk into people’s homes and offices you create a bond. You hear stories about life and you help create environments that bring further happiness. It’s a lot deeper than I anticipated, such as the love I have for my 2 sons.
